San Shou Kuan
(Saturday classses are on first and third Saturday of the month)

San Shou Kuan better know as Sanda. It's competitive history is rooted in barehanded elevated arena or Lei Tai fights in which no rules were observed.

However, Sanda as a competitive event developed in the military as these bouts were commonly held between the soldiers to test and practice barehanded martial skills, ability and techniques.

Rules were developed and the use of protective gloves etc. was adopted. It was originally used by the Kuomintang at the first modern military academy in Whampoa in the 1920s. Later it was also adopted as a method by the People's Liberation Army of China. Sanda's curriculum was developed with reference to traditional Chinese martial arts.

This general Wushu Sanda curriculum varies in its different forms, as the Chinese government developed a version for civilians for self-defence and as a sport.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Intro
A rapidly growing grappling sport and widely considered as the most complete martial arts for ground fighting, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is derived from a combination of traditional jiu jitsu, judo, and wrestling, with a focus on positional control and submissions attained using leverage and technique.

Class info
Predominantly focusing on grappling on the ground without the use of strikes, BJJ emphasises the use of leverage, speed and technical application over strength and power - enabling a smaller person to control and submit a much larger opponent. A typical class consists of functional warm ups, some takedowns, positional technique repetition or 'drilling' and controlled sparring, referred to as rolling. BJJ is both a highly effective martial art for self defense as well as a fun, technical and challenging combat sport.
